Get Excited About Today!

Everyday most of us face the world with optimism for a multitude of things that we want to get accomplished. I know I wake up with a heart full of thanksgiving to the opportunity of each new day. I think about how I want to present myself, the things that need to happen, the things I’d like to happen, what will I cook for dinner, who can I bless, what will productivity look like? I think about all these things before my feet get a chance to hit the floor. The truth is, I’m filled with a mixture of hope and anxiety. And more days that not, I struggle with this duality of expectation. I think we would all love to be fueled by the opportunity and potential of each day. But then reality comes and slaps us around a bit, reminding us of recent failures, set backs, deficiencies and downright harsh realities of life. More and more I question, just whose reality is tainting my outlook. Most of my failures have served me well; I have learned some grand lessons. And those harsh realities, for the most part are usually other people’s mess that I have either taken on or they are trying desperately to get me to buy into. And of course the messes I create and invite others to marvel at.

Everyday with a renewed sense of hope we need to look to the future, believing that yesterday we did our share, the best we could. This releases us from the false pressure of bringing over the crap of yesterday to make it better. Here’s a news flash, the turd from yesterday is still a turd. Leave it there, no better yet flush it and focus on the opportunities at hand. To be clear this is not am airy-fairy suggestion to walk away from all but sunny situations. On the contrary, we certainly need to deal with our circumstances. But deal with them, without the carryover of angst and negative emotion. Solutions will be abundant if we are not burdened with the anxiety of yesterday. Let your mind be renewed daily. Be fueled by hope for the future while simultaneously giving yourself over to the beauty of the present. We are all brand new souls, even in the midst of struggling with our old ugly ways. There’s a whole lot of hope in that.
